Note from my Great-grandmother Allen (Blanche May Rall)

April 1954

Mother [Nancy Ellen Ashley] had only recorded one or two pages in her bible, and it being so worn and loose, I have removed that page and will fasten in this book. As far back as 1926, I wrote to my mother's brother, Charles Ashley for information about the Ashley family, and he sent me a page from the family bible which he said was all he could find. It has become so faded and dim I can scarcely read it. But will copy it and also fasten it and Uncle Charlie's note in this book. I am sorry I did not follow up my idea years ago while some of the older ones were still living and coud have helped me out.

Cousin Edna Tucker has helped me a lot on the Ashley side of the family and Cousin Edith & Edgar Roll's girl, and Cousin Wilber Roll, Cousin Ore.. Roll's widow, and Cousin Joe Roll's widow have been a big help on the Roll Side of the family.

Neal's sister Cordelia, his brother Robert, sister Grace and Amos's wife have helped out on the Allen side of the family. Also, niece Mabel Boone and his cousin Maude Noland and neice LuLu Joslin.

-- Grandfather Ashley [William Ashley] --

I know very little about Grandfather's family. He was born in England and came to America when a young man. He was a wagon maker and cabinet maker. I have heard mother tell of his making caskets for the dead in their community. He also owned farm lands.

After he and grandmother were married he started back to England with a cargo of spokes, on a sail-ship and was ship-wrecked and lost his cargo. I do not know how he himself was rescued.

I have heard mother speak about corresonding with some of her English cousins before she was married, but never during my rememberance. Grandfather refused to accept his right to his father's property (being the oldest son) because he had left home and considered it should go to his brother. I never say my grandfather but once. Uncle Charley gave his age at the time of his death as 86 years, but according to my dates and recollections he must have died in 1879, and if he was born in 1795 that would make him 84 yrs.

Another note from my Great-grandmother Allen (Blanche May Rall)

Aug. 1954

I just remembered I have heard mother talk of her uncle Robert Ashley, who lived in Chiviot, Ohio. He had at least 2 girls and a boy. Perhaps more. But that is about all I remember of them. So there must have been the two brothers come to America.

-- Grandmother Ashley [Sarah Lewis] --

I never saw my grandmother but twice and can remember but little about her, but from my mother's accounts she must have been a very energetic, capable woman, and had very strict idea of keeping the sabbath. I knew and remember some of her sisters and her brother Benjamin Lewis whom we use to visit about once a year in Deleware Co., Ind. In fact we spent our first night with him and Aunt Sarah, on our trek to Kans. in the covered wagon, on May 20, 1885. The next morning we stopped at his sisters's home, Aunt Nancy Jennings to tell her goodbye. We use to visit her too. Uncle Ben was a very successful farmer. He was one of the old 49ers, and had made quite a "stake" in the Calif. gold field. He had a scarf pin made from some of his gold. I have heard mother mention an uncle John Lewis but I never saw him and doubt if she did. She also talked about Aunt Nellie Payne. I do not remember her. But remember her aunt Ada Johnes who had a store in Muncie, Ind. But best of all I remember Aunt Betsey Kever, who was more like a grandmother to we children, as I never knew my own grandmothers. I was born on one of Aunt Betsey's farms.
